Graves of Fifty-First Illinois at Corinth MS National Cemetery & Shiloh TN National Cemetery

Main entrance to Corinth National Cemetery, established in 1866, shown above; individual graves of members of the Fifty-First Illinois Infantry buried in the Corinth Cemetery shown below. The men buried at Corinth in northeast Mississippi and Levi Smith, the single member of the regiment buried at Shiloh in southwest Tennessee, all died early in the war and all died of disease, as the regiment advanced deeper into the South in April, May, and June of 1862 in the campaign to take Corinth.

Died of chronic diarrhea, August 18, 1862, in hospital at Corinth, Mississippi.

Grave of Levi Smith, Company E
Born in Indiana, circa 1836. Single, resident of Champaign County, farmer.
Died of disease at Hamburg, Tennessee, about May 1, 1862, just before the regiment moved south into Mississippi. Hence Smith was buried in Tennessee whereas the others on this page were originally buried around Farmington (where there was for a time a Federal hospital) and Corinth, Mississippi—and all eventually reinterred in the Corinth National Cemetery.
